Threshing begins
The dragons are waiting in the Vale
Every first year who survived the parapet walks into the Vale today. Dragons choose. Dragons refuse. Some cadets don't walk out.
Original fan story. Not the official Dragonkind game.
What is the Threshing Day game?
The Threshing Day game is the dragon bonding experience readers play alongside Threshing Day, Rebecca Yarros's new Empyrean collection. In the Fourth Wing books, Threshing is the day first year cadets walk into the Vale and the dragons decide who becomes a rider. Some cadets bond. Some get burned.
There are two ways to play it. The official game is Dragonkind, which Rebecca Yarros opened on October 1, 2026. The second is the free Threshing Day game on this page: an original seven step story with no account, no cooldown after you burn, and a dragon card you can share with your book club.

Dragon colors in the Threshing Day game
Your strongest trait decides your dragon's color. Blue and black dragons are rare rolls.
Red
Fierce, quick to anger, and fearless in a fight.
Orange
Volatile and proud. Riders say they are the hardest to handle.
Green
Calculating and patient. They weigh every move.
Brown
Steady and protective. Strong defenders of their riders.
Blue
Powerful and selective. They bond with very few cadets.
Black
The rarest color of all. Seeing one in the Vale is an event.
Dragon tail types you can bond
Your second strongest trait decides the tail. A tie between your top two traits can give you a morningstartail.
Swordtail
A long blade of bone for sweeping strikes.
Daggertail
A short, sharp spike built for speed.
Clubtail
A heavy bone club that smashes through armor.
Scorpiontail
A curved, stinging point that strikes from above.
Morningstartail
A spiked ball of bone that hits like a mace.
How to survive Threshing on Dragonkind
Players on Reddit and Threads agree on one thing: the official Threshing Day game has no guaranteed route through the Vale. The same choices bond one player and burn the next.
- Expect to burn a few times. Players report three or four deaths before a bond.
- After a burn, testers saw a 4:00 countdown before they could try again.
- Keep your wing, section, and squad in mind. Dragonkind assigns them before Threshing.
- Play the Threshing Day game on this page while you wait out the timer.
