Fourth Wing Dragon Types

Six colors, five tails, and the temper that comes with each. Here is every Fourth Wing dragon type, painted, with the dragons from the books that carry it.

What are the Fourth Wing dragon types?

Fourth Wing dragon types come from two things: color and tail. The color tells you the dragon's temper, from fierce reds to the rare and ancient blacks. The tail is its weapon, from the long blade of a swordtail to the spiked mace of a morningstartail. Six colors and five tails make 30 Fourth Wing dragon types, and every dragon in the Riders Quadrant is one of them.

In the books, color and tail are the first two words a rider uses to describe a dragon. Xaden Riorson's Sgaeyl is a blue daggertail. Violet Sorrengail's Tairn is a black morningstartail. Learn the 30 combinations below and you can picture any dragon the moment it is named.

FAQ

Fourth Wing dragon types FAQ

Short answers to what players ask most.

How many dragon types are in Fourth Wing?

Six colors and five battle tails. A dragon is red, orange, green, brown, blue or black, with a swordtail, daggertail, clubtail, scorpiontail or morningstartail. That makes 30 Fourth Wing dragon types, all pictured above. Feathertails are a separate, rare kind.

What is the rarest dragon type in Fourth Wing?

Black dragons are the rarest color in the books. Tairn, Violet Sorrengail's dragon, is a black morningstartail. Our black dragon guide shows how many Dragonkind players have bonded one.

What is the deadliest tail type?

The morningstartail. It pairs the weight of a clubtail with the spikes of a daggertail, and it is the tail on Tairn.

What type of dragon is Sgaeyl?

Sgaeyl, Xaden Riorson's dragon, is a blue daggertail. See every POV rider and their dragon in our Threshing Day book guide.

What is a feathertail?

A feathertail is a young gold dragon with a tail of feathers instead of a weapon. Feathertails do not bond with riders as a rule. Andarna, who chooses Violet, is the famous exception.
